As we near the end of the year, we also take time to reflect on our community goals and consider where we stand, the challenges ahead, and how we can work together to sustain the future of AsyncAPI.
State of Finances and Funding
Like many open-source communities, the AsyncAPI Initiative is navigating financial challenges and funding. This year, we weren’t able to secure enough sponsorship funding to support community activities at the level we planned for 2026/27, as many companies didn’t renew. We’re still grateful to the few companies that are still sponsoring.
While this doesn't take away the work we have done so far, we do need to readjust our community programs and activities, including the resources and people involved under the Community WG.
At the moment, the Governance Board has proposed the Budget for 2027, and the Technical Steering Committee is voting, which will determine what we can realistically sustain and which initiatives we need to scale back until funding becomes available.
This is an important moment for us to be honest about our capacity and make decisions together that put long-term community health first.
Shared Ownership and Community Sustainability for 2027
As we plan for 2027 and coordinate community work, our structure has always depended on a small group of individuals. While their contributions are invaluable, this won’t be a sustainable model long term. We need more people to take ownership, lend a hand in different areas of the community, and lead some programs. We have started the discussion on Sustaining the Community and sharing ideas.
We encourage everyone to share their opinions and get involved in creating opportunities for more people to feel empowered to contribute and take on leadership responsibilities.
We Need Your Help
As we continue sustaining the initiative, we need to strengthen our partnerships and connections across the wider ecosystem. Hence, we need your help by:
- Connecting us with organisations/companies that can support or sponsor us.
- Identifying potential funding opportunities, grants or programs
- Helping us reach companies that use and are already building with AsyncAPI
We have built a strong community, and we hope more members will get involved.
AsyncAPI Conference 2026
We were back again for our 6th anniversary of the AsyncAPI Online Conference, and as something we strive to do annually, it was great to do it again this year. We expanded the talks a bit this year and brought more Event-Driven Architecture into the mix, and overall we had over 972 views on YouTube during the livestream.
We wouldn’t have had a successful event without our speakers and volunteers, who took the time to record sessions and support us on-stage and off-stage. If you missed the conference, catch up on all the sessions available on the YouTube playlist.
API Standards Conference
We’re heading to Paris this December to join the API Standards Conference with our friends and fellow communities, OpenAPI, GraphQL, and JSON Schema. The conference will span 3 days from the 1st to the 3rd of December and we will also be at the API Standards booth.
Please keep an eye out for the speakers and the agenda, but you can now get yourself a Free Ticket to the conference and be sure to invite your friends as well. We look forward to seeing you there!
Spec x Tooling
Pavel Bodiachevskii has just released a new tool called Kurkik, a messaging-infrastructure side of a self-maintaining API. It reads your on-premises or cloud brokers, writes what it finds as AsyncAPI, catches drift between your documents and what actually runs, and proposes the fix. Please take a moment to explore it and share your feedback.
AsyncAPI Conference Hall of Fame
I want to highlight and thank these amazing volunteers who dedicated their skills and time to the Online Conference's success, from designers to those working on and off stage.
